2024 Pictograms:

A pictogram is a graphic symbol that conveys its meaning through its pictorial resemblance to a physical object

While there is evidence that Olympic Games pictograms were around significantly earlier, it is the Tokyo 1964 games that defined the Olympic Pictogram system we know today. The Japanese had an additional obstacle to manage when hosting the games in that not many competitors or spectators could speak or read Japanese, so they developed a visual system to help competitors and spectators identify the different sports and find their way around the Olympic venues.

From then on, through Mexico,Munich, Montreal, Moscow, LA,  Barcelona, Sydney, Vancouver, London, Rio, and everywhere else in between, before finally coming back to Tokyo for the summer Olympics of 2020/21, the Pictograms have continued to evolve and reflect a bigger picture for the hosts and the movement itself.

Very recently, 2024 hosts Paris, revealed their iteration of the Olympic Pictograms.

The 62 pictograms illustrate each of the Olympic and Paralympic sports in a unique coat of arms, paying homage to the complexity of each of these sports and what makes them original.

Built around this ‘Coat of Arms’ style, Each pictogram is designed with features of three elements

  • A distinct tool of the sport it represents
  • A representation of the playing field
  • An axis of symmetry

Hey look at this design:
